DiEM25 docu night: Life in Syria before the war

In line with the Sunday cinema at B-Lage and the festival “Offenes Neukölln” DiEM25 invites you to our seventh DiEM25 docu night. With the movie we want to give an insight into the life in Syria before the war. With that we can get a different view on our lives and the lives of our Syrian friends. Following the movie, we want to discuss: What should politics on European and local level do for a better living together?

About the New Deal Task Force

The Task Force New Deal of Berlin’s DSC (DiEM Spontaneous Collective) contributes to and comments on economic and financial policy positions within DiEM as a whole. In doing so, it aims to build up a common pool of economic knowledge and make it accessible for all DiEM members. Results from our discussions are intended to serve as short lexicon articles explaining key concepts and terms of relevance to DiEM and the economic policy field while also clearly pointing to advantages and drawbacks from a political perspective.

Status Quo

Earlier this year Diem25 has presented its vision for the economic future of Europe, the European New Deal. All over Europe, local collectives have formed to give input for Diem’s first position paper, and a central collective of specialists has assembled these suggestions and formed them into a coherent proposal. The Berlin New Deal group continues to debate specific proposals from the New Deal paper in order to be able to communicate them eventually.

A brief introduction to the New Deal as well as the entire paper is available here https://diem25.org/end/.

Further information and the current state of debate can be found in the channel #p1-newdeal in the communication platform Slack which the Berlin DSC of DiEM25 uses for coordination.

We’re looking forward to discussing with you and to your input into DiEM’s New Deal for Europe!

DiEM25 docu night with “War Zone”

According to her own words, War Zone is a direct response of a filmmaker and producer Maggie Hadleigh-West to the experiences of being involuntarily exposed, judged and assaulted that women are forced to go through on a everyday level. She did this by bringing those not hesitating to exercise their power on any occasion to publicly talk about it while she and her associates have been filming these spontaneous encounters.

In this personal and intimate documentary resulting from hundred of interviews that Hadleigh-West conducted with men and women across the United States, she managed to show how their different views on meaning of sex and gender are being a source of what she called war zone.

Some of her respondents were obviously annoyed, often reacting in arrogant if not a violent manner, while on the other occasions they’ve been simply revealing their own fears and insecurities in a funny and emotional way. This is the confirmation of Maggie’s talent to prove her point in her own and distinctive way, characterizing her other movies as well. One of the commentators of her work described it as a street credibility that she poses.

During this evening we would like to address the relationship between private and public space, love and politics and the problem of sexualized violence as a symptom of the structural mechanisms of power and hierarchies rooted in our contemporary societies. We would also like to discussion about the alternative politics to these practices that are unfortunately still present in our everyday surrounding.

In order to keep doing our work we will also ask for a small donation (~3 €) to finance the costs we have.

DiEM25 docu night with “Europe’s Forbidden Colony”

Dear everybody,

we invite you once more to our docu night. We show the documentary “Europe’s Forbidden Colony” in english.

Croatian philosopher Srecko Horvat travels from Idomeni in Greece, where in 2015 refugees fleeing war and poverty entered Europe, to the dockyards of the Greek port of Pireaus, where workers’ unions say they are fighting a new kind of privatisation, and from Romania, where people are fighting to protect their forests from international investment firms, to the City of London.

On his way Horvat talks to Syrian refugee Mustafa al Hamoud, former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, French protesters at the Nuit Debout, Mayor of Barcelina Ada Colau, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and many more.

Following the movie screening we want to discuss, if Europe indeed has colonies and ask you about your ideas for Europe. We will also ask for a small donation to finance the costs we have.
